Description
Teaching your bird of prey or owl to fly free without any restraint, and to return to your gloved hand when you call is one of the great joys of life. However, training a bird of prey to fly free can be difficult. It requires an understanding of the physical and psychological make up of raptors and how to work with these to ensure the well-being of your bird of prey or owl whilst at the same time achieving your goals.
The course builds upon your basic husbandry and management skills developed in the course ‘Keeping birds of prey’ and covers 4 modules:
- Falconry ‘furniture’ and equipment – describing the equipment you need and how to use it.
- Species characteristics and rearing techniques – how to ensure you get the correct bird of prey or owl for you
- Initial training, manning and weight management – The essential techniques you need to successfully tame and train your bird of prey or owl
- Flying an unrestrained bird of prey – ensuring that your bird of prey or owl is ready to fly free, and what to do if it all goes wrong.
Each lesson has a test of your knowledge which you can use to assess your improving knowledge and understanding. Study at home for your Theory-only Certificate, or choose a Raptor Awards practical course from one of our approved centres for full certification (Theory and Practice).
